Composite scores
Overall: Beijing wins by 1.3 points
Population & size
Is Beijing bigger than Seattle?
Beijing is the bigger city: about 22M people versus Seattle's 750k — roughly 29× larger.
City-proper / metro population estimates. Size is one input — scroll on for cost of living, salary equivalence and quality-of-life scoring.
Distance
How far is Beijing from Seattle?
Beijing is about 8,690 km (5,400 mi) from Seattle in a straight line — roughly 11 h of nonstop flight time.
Great-circle distance, not a routed itinerary; flight estimate assumes ~850 km/h cruise plus 45 minutes of taxi, climb and descent.
Climate
Is Beijing warmer than Seattle?
Beijing and Seattle have broadly similar temperatures across the year. Beijing gets noticeably more sun — about 500 more sunshine hours per year.
| Month | Beijing | Seattle |
|---|---|---|
| January (high / low) | 2° / -8°C | 7° / 2°C |
| July (high / low) | 31° / 22°C | 24° / 14°C |
Dry continental — cold arid winters with spring dust events, hot humid summers concentrated in Jul-Aug downpours. Big seasonal swings.
Oceanic. Famously gray and damp Oct-May, dry warm summers Jun-Sep. Year-round temperatures moderate; snow rare in the city itself.
Beijing edges out Seattle on the Mundevo composite, 6.3 to 5.0 out of 10 — a decisive 1.3-point margin across safety, healthcare, air quality and cost.
A 1.3-point composite gap is large enough that the result holds across most reasonable axis re-weightings. Still worth scanning the per-axis breakdown if you have a non-default priority (e.g. air quality matters more to you than the default 25% weight).
Run the salary calculator for both cities at your target lifestyle before deciding — Beijing winning on quality doesn't mean the gross-salary requirement also lands in your favor. If you're on a balanced tier, the cost-of-living pages for each city carry the full monthly basket and the gross-salary figure.

Score-by-score, side-by-side
Each axis is scored independently with disclosed weights and a calculation string.
The exact scores and winners:
| Axis | Beijing | Seattle | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affordability | 6.4 | 1.0 | Beijing +5.4 |
| Quality of life | 6.3 | 6.7 | Seattle +0.4 |
| Remote-work friendliness | 6.4 | 7.2 | Seattle +0.8 |
| Healthcare | 5.9 | 5.2 | Beijing +0.7 |
Each axis is a weighted aggregate of underlying indicators normalized to a 0–10 scale. Weights are explicit and disclosed per axis. The composite is the unweighted mean of the four axes — axes are not collapsed further because the underlying trade-offs (e.g. low cost vs poor air quality) are user-dependent.
Affordability
- Cost-of-living index (weight 60%)42
- Rent index (weight 40%)28
How this is calculated
Affordability = ((100 − costIndex)/100 × 0.6 + (100 − rentIndex)/100 × 0.4) × 10. For Beijing: ((100 − 42)/100 × 0.6 + (100 − 28)/100 × 0.4) × 10 = 6.4.
Beijing is mid-range on absolute cost. Affordability is reasonable but not its main advantage.
Quality of life
- Safety index (weight 40%)72
- Healthcare index (weight 35%)67
- Air quality index (weight 25%)44
How this is calculated
QoL = (safety/100 × 0.4 + healthcare/100 × 0.35 + airQuality/100 × 0.25) × 10. For Beijing: (72/100 × 0.4 + 67/100 × 0.35 + 44/100 × 0.25) × 10 = 6.3.
Beijing has a mixed quality profile. Safety: good; healthcare: good; air: fair. Weigh the weakest axis against your personal priorities.
Remote-work friendliness
- Internet (median Mbps) (weight 45%)150 Mbps
- Effective income tax (lower = better) (weight 30%)10.0%
- Cost-of-living (lower = better) (weight 25%)42
How this is calculated
RemoteWork = (min(Mbps/300, 1) × 0.45 + (1 − incomeTax) × 0.3 + (100 − costIndex)/100 × 0.25) × 10. For Beijing: (min(150/300, 1) × 0.45 + (1 − 0.1) × 0.3 + (100 − 42)/100 × 0.25) × 10 = 6.4.
Beijing works for remote work but isn't optimized for it: internet 150 Mbps, income tax 10%, cost index 42.
Healthcare
- Healthcare quality index (weight 70%)67
- Healthcare out-of-pocket / month (lower = better) (weight 30%)300
How this is calculated
Healthcare = (qualityIndex/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − OOP/500) × 0.3) × 10. For Beijing: (67/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − 300/500) × 0.3) × 10 = 5.9.
Beijing has trade-offs in healthcare: quality is good, typical out-of-pocket cost is ~300 CNY/month. Cross-border insurance closes the gap.
- Cost-of-living index (weight 60%)92
- Rent index (weight 40%)88
How this is calculated
Affordability = ((100 − costIndex)/100 × 0.6 + (100 − rentIndex)/100 × 0.4) × 10. For Seattle: ((100 − 92)/100 × 0.6 + (100 − 88)/100 × 0.4) × 10 = 1.
Seattle is among the more expensive cities tracked. Salary expectations should be calibrated to the high cost base before relocating.
Quality of life
- Safety index (weight 40%)55
- Healthcare index (weight 35%)75
- Air quality index (weight 25%)75
How this is calculated
QoL = (safety/100 × 0.4 + healthcare/100 × 0.35 + airQuality/100 × 0.25) × 10. For Seattle: (55/100 × 0.4 + 75/100 × 0.35 + 75/100 × 0.25) × 10 = 6.7.
Seattle has a mixed quality profile. Safety: good; healthcare: good; air: good. Weigh the weakest axis against your personal priorities.
Remote-work friendliness
- Internet (median Mbps) (weight 45%)300 Mbps
- Effective income tax (lower = better) (weight 30%)17.0%
- Cost-of-living (lower = better) (weight 25%)92
How this is calculated
RemoteWork = (min(Mbps/300, 1) × 0.45 + (1 − incomeTax) × 0.3 + (100 − costIndex)/100 × 0.25) × 10. For Seattle: (min(300/300, 1) × 0.45 + (1 − 0.17) × 0.3 + (100 − 92)/100 × 0.25) × 10 = 7.2.
Seattle combines fast internet (300 Mbps median), a 17% effective income tax and cost index 92 — a strong configuration for remote workers earning in a stronger currency.
Healthcare
- Healthcare quality index (weight 70%)75
- Healthcare out-of-pocket / month (lower = better) (weight 30%)500
How this is calculated
Healthcare = (qualityIndex/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − OOP/500) × 0.3) × 10. For Seattle: (75/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − 500/500) × 0.3) × 10 = 5.2.
Seattle has trade-offs in healthcare: quality is good, typical out-of-pocket cost is ~500 USD/month. Cross-border insurance closes the gap.

Where each city's money goes
Two cities can have the same monthly total but very different shapes — one might burn 50% on housing while the other splits more evenly. The composition matters as much as the headline.
The biggest shape difference is leisure: Beijing spends 10.3 percentage points more of its budget on it (24% vs. 13%). If you're sensitive to that category, weight the per-axis scores accordingly.

Calculation
For each of the four axes we compute an independent 0–10 score using the formulas printed beside each axis. The composite is the unweighted mean of the four axes. The overall winner is the city with the higher composite, unless the margin is under 0.05 points — in which case Beijing is shown first as a tiebreaker to keep results stable.
Limitations
- Climate is not scored — we don't yet hold a maintained climate dataset, so weather-driven preferences are not modeled.
- Tax differences between cities in the same country are not modeled (Spain and Germany don't have material regional differences for this dataset).
- Indices are population-level. Personal cost varies with neighborhood, employer benefits and family status.
- Quality-of-life axis weights (safety 0.4 / healthcare 0.35 / air 0.25) are editorial defaults — readers with strong preferences should re-weight manually.
