Distance
How far is Beijing from Taipei?
Beijing is about 1,720 km (1,070 mi) from Taipei in a straight line — roughly 2 h 45 m of nonstop flight time.

Climate
Is Beijing warmer than Taipei?
Taipei is the warmer city: January highs average 19°C vs 2°C, and July 34°C vs 31°C. Beijing gets noticeably more sun — about 1,240 more sunshine hours per year.
| Month | Beijing | Taipei |
|---|---|---|
| January (high / low) | 2° / -8°C | 19° / 14°C |
| July (high / low) | 31° / 22°C | 34° / 26°C |
Dry continental — cold arid winters with spring dust events, hot humid summers concentrated in Jul-Aug downpours. Big seasonal swings.
Humid subtropical with extreme rainfall — annual mm exceeds most European cities by 4x. Hot humid summers, mild damp winters; typhoon risk Aug-Oct.
Taipei edges Beijing by 0.4 points, driven by higher livability scores despite Beijing's larger economic footprint and global influence.
Taipei's 6.7 sits well above Beijing's 6.3, reflecting stronger housing affordability and public transit efficiency in the smaller city.
If livability matters more than career opportunity, Taipei wins; if you need Beijing's job market and don't mind the trade-offs, the narrow gap suggests both are viable.

Score-by-score, side-by-side
Each axis is scored independently with disclosed weights and a calculation string.
The exact scores and winners:
| Axis | Beijing | Taipei | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Affordability | 7.7 | 7.5 | Beijing +0.2 |
| Quality of life | 6.3 | 8.2 | Taipei +1.9 |
| Remote-work friendliness | 6.9 | 8.9 | Taipei +2.0 |
| Healthcare | 6.7 | 6.2 | Beijing +0.5 |
Each axis is a weighted aggregate of underlying indicators normalized to a 0–10 scale. Weights are explicit and disclosed per axis. The composite is the unweighted mean of the four axes — axes are not collapsed further because the underlying trade-offs (e.g. low cost vs poor air quality) are user-dependent.
Affordability
- Cost-of-living index (weight 60%)24
- Rent index (weight 40%)21
How this is calculated
Affordability = ((100 − costIndex)/100 × 0.6 + (100 − rentIndex)/100 × 0.4) × 10. For Beijing: ((100 − 24)/100 × 0.6 + (100 − 21)/100 × 0.4) × 10 = 7.7.
Beijing sits well below the New York baseline on both cost-of-living and rent. Budgets stretch further here than in benchmark Tier-1 cities.
Quality of life
- Safety index (weight 40%)72
- Healthcare index (weight 35%)67
- Air quality index (weight 25%)44
How this is calculated
QoL = (safety/100 × 0.4 + healthcare/100 × 0.35 + airQuality/100 × 0.25) × 10. For Beijing: (72/100 × 0.4 + 67/100 × 0.35 + 44/100 × 0.25) × 10 = 6.3.
Beijing has a mixed quality profile. Safety: good; healthcare: good; air: fair. Weigh the weakest axis against your personal priorities.
Remote-work friendliness
- Internet (median Mbps) (weight 45%)150 Mbps
- Effective income tax (lower = better) (weight 30%)10.0%
- Cost-of-living (lower = better) (weight 25%)24
How this is calculated
RemoteWork = (min(Mbps/300, 1) × 0.45 + (1 − incomeTax) × 0.3 + (100 − costIndex)/100 × 0.25) × 10. For Beijing: (min(150/300, 1) × 0.45 + (1 − 0.1) × 0.3 + (100 − 24)/100 × 0.25) × 10 = 6.9.
Beijing works for remote work but isn't optimized for it: internet 150 Mbps, income tax 10%, cost index 24.
Healthcare
- Healthcare quality index (weight 70%)67
- Healthcare out-of-pocket / month (lower = better) (weight 30%)163
How this is calculated
Healthcare = (qualityIndex/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − OOP/500) × 0.3) × 10. For Beijing: (67/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − 163/500) × 0.3) × 10 = 6.7.
Beijing has trade-offs in healthcare: quality is good, typical out-of-pocket cost is ~163 CNY/month. Cross-border insurance closes the gap.

Affordability
- Cost-of-living index (weight 60%)28
- Rent index (weight 40%)20
How this is calculated

Taipei sits well below the New York baseline on both cost-of-living and rent. Budgets stretch further here than in benchmark Tier-1 cities.
Quality of life
- Safety index (weight 40%)88
- Healthcare index (weight 35%)88
- Air quality index (weight 25%)65

- Internet (median Mbps) (weight 45%)300 Mbps
- Effective income tax (lower = better) (weight 30%)13.0%
- Cost-of-living (lower = better) (weight 25%)28
How this is calculated

Taipei combines fast internet (300 Mbps median), a 13% effective income tax and cost index 28 — a strong configuration for remote workers earning in a stronger currency.
Healthcare
- Healthcare quality index (weight 70%)88
- Healthcare out-of-pocket / month (lower = better) (weight 30%)1493
How this is calculated
Healthcare = (qualityIndex/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − OOP/500) × 0.3) × 10. For Taipei: (88/100 × 0.7 + max(0, 1 − 1493/500) × 0.3) × 10 = 6.2.

Where each city's money goes
Two cities can have the same monthly total but very different shapes — one might burn 50% on housing while the other splits more evenly. The composition matters as much as the headline.
The biggest shape difference is housing: Beijing spends 11.9 percentage points more of its budget on it (62% vs. 50%). If you're sensitive to that category, weight the per-axis scores accordingly.

Data sources
- Mundevo per-city dataset. Cost basket, rent index, safety, healthcare, air quality and median internet for both cities. Reference date: 2026-06-10 (Beijing) and 2026-05-29 (Taipei).
- FX rate. 1 TWD = 0.2181 CNY, used to normalize cost baskets.
- CityScoreCalculator. Four axes (Affordability, Quality of life, Remote work, Healthcare) computed with explicit weights and explanations. See per-axis calculation strings rendered on this page.

Calculation
For each of the four axes we compute an independent 0–10 score using the formulas printed beside each axis. The composite is the unweighted mean of the four axes. The overall winner is the city with the higher composite, unless the margin is under 0.05 points — in which case Beijing is shown first as a tiebreaker to keep results stable.
Limitations
- Climate is not scored — we don't yet hold a maintained climate dataset, so weather-driven preferences are not modeled.
- Tax differences between cities in the same country are not modeled (Spain and Germany don't have material regional differences for this dataset).
- Indices are population-level. Personal cost varies with neighborhood, employer benefits and family status.
- Quality-of-life axis weights (safety 0.4 / healthcare 0.35 / air 0.25) are editorial defaults — readers with strong preferences should re-weight manually.
