Digital nomad visa
A residence permit category designed for remote workers earning income from outside the host country.
Digital nomad visas are a relatively new category — most appeared between 2020 and 2024 — letting remote workers stay 1-2 years in a country without forming a local employment relationship. Eligibility is usually defined by minimum monthly income (often €2,500-€3,500), proof of remote employment or freelance contracts, and clean criminal background.
What they typically don't do: confer immediate tax residency benefits. In most cases, you're a tax resident of the host country if you stay over 183 days, which can mean paying local tax on your foreign income unless a treaty applies. Read the small print before assuming the visa equals tax savings.
Examples: Portugal D8, Spain digital nomad visa, Estonia Digital Nomad Visa, Greece Digital Nomad Visa, Croatia DNV, Dubai virtual working program. Each has different income thresholds, family-sponsorship rules, and renewal mechanics. Always confirm current requirements with the consulate or an immigration lawyer before committing to a move.
