How this ranking is built
Your $40,000/year gross is converted to each city's local currency at the static FX rates Mundevo uses for the rest of the site, then run through that country's effective income-tax + employee social-security rate to get a take-home net.
For each lifestyle tier (frugal / balanced / comfortable / premium), Mundevo's cost-of-living model computes the required monthly net at the local price level. If your computed net covers the required net at a tier, the tier is "supported". The best-supported tier is the headline for that city, and the headroom (how much extra net you'd have beyond the tier requirement) sorts cities within each band.
Caveats: a single static FX snapshot will be 1-5% off the live rate; effective tax rates assume a single salaried filer with no special deductions; AI-estimated cities inherit a ±15-25% uncertainty band on their underlying basket. Use the interactive calculator for a per-input check, and the glossary for definitions of the underlying terms.
